Bruce hails Upson

Upson and King Kenny Cunningham have formed a formidable partnership at the heart of the Blues defence and in the three Premiership games played so far this season have helped Blues become the only side in all four divisions yet to concede a goal.

The Blues centre-back has been rewarded for his performances by receiving (all too late in my opinion) a place in Sven-Göran Eriksson's England squad for their two forthcoming Euro 2004 qualifiers against Macedonia on Saturday and Liechtenstein next wednesday, much to the delight of the Blues boss.

“I’m delighted,” Bruce told the Birmingham Post.

“He fully deserves it. He has showed for me in the last two games that he is the best left-sided central defender in the country.

“I don’t care whoever else there is who is left-footed, I wouldn’t swap Matt for anyone. He is playing really well. He was impressive for us against Shearer and he was impressive against Beattie too.

“Of course he has an excellent partner alongside him but he is still a very good player who will continue to improve.”
