Last updated : 09 April 2009 By Brian Cartlidge

The former Reading, Aston Villa and Hibernian wing-back has decided against prolonging his stay with Blues and has returned to Ecuador.

De la Cruz had been on a one month contract at Blues which expired at the beginning of this week and although manager Alex McLeish had wanted to extend his stay the 35-year-old has decided to return to his homeland having made just one brief substitutes appearance during his time at St Andrews.

"I did give him the opportunity to stay to the death with us, but he declined,McLeish told the Birmingham Mail.

"I think he will be going back to Ecuador to give himself the best chance of being involved with the national team for the World Cup and Copa America campaign.
