Newcastle Res 0 - Blues Res 0

The experienced defensive trio of Michael Johnson, Steve Vickers and Darren Purse proved to be too difficult for a young Magpies side to break down and Blues more than deserved a draw which sees them undefeated in two away games this week.

Blues had chances to win the game - Christophe Grondin shot just over the bar from 20 yards half an hour into the game and Michael Johnson had the best chance of the half when blazing over the bar from six-yards out following a Bryan Hughes corner.

Hughes himself then had a low drive saved by Bartlett in the Newcastle goal just before the break.

Chances were few and far between in the second half but in the worsening fog at Kingston Park, Blues pressed for a winner and substitute Curtis went close after good work on the right from Hughes.

And the same two players combined again in the dying minutes - the young substitutes header forcing a good save from Bartlett.

Darren Purse played the full ninety minutes again and will now be looking for a return to Steve Bruce's first team squad when Blues play Tottenham next weekend.

Blues: Marriott, Cottrill, Johnson, Vickers, Purse, Carter, Allen, Grondin, Barrowman (Curtis 66), Hughes, Alsop. Subs not used: Beauchamp, Doyle, Mottram, Hipkiss.

Newcastle: Bartlett, Norton, Kendrick, Taylor, Carr, Orr, Gardner (Smylie 66) , Beaumont, Zola Makongo, Guy, Ferrell (Jackson 55). Subs not used: Brittain, Collin, Labonte.
