Villa Res 2 - Blues Res 1

Last updated : 01 September 2003 By Brian Cartlidge
Blues started the game well and deservedly opened the scoring on six minutes - Stern John bundling in after good work down the right flank from Geoff Horsfield to score his third goal in the last two reserve team outings.

The lead didn't last long however and within 10 minutes of leading Blues found themselves behind in the game - Villa defender Ridgewell bringing the scores level and then Cooke giving them a lead.

Blues only other notable chance in the first period was a 25-yard shot from Jovan Kirovski that went wide of Postma's post and Villa went into the interval with a single goal advantage.

The second half lacked any real goalscoring chances although Stern John did head over with a half chance from a corner kick and Coly unleashed a powerful effort from 30-yards out on 75 minutes.

Paul Devlin was booed for most of the second half by the Villa fans for two very late challenges - the second of which earned the Blues winger a yellow card.

So Blues were unable to record back-to-back wins in the Premiership reserve league but they have a quick chance to get back to winning ways with another game on Thursday night against Sunderland at St. Andrew's.
