The Blues boss has said that he will have to wait and see if he is the man that that the board are to pin their hopes on taking Blues back to the top-flight next season.

"There is a huge job to be done here. There are seven or eight players out of contract. There are two loans and two or three players badly injured," Bruce said after the goalless draw at St Andrew's saw Blues relegated to the Championship.

"There a big rebuilding job to be done and I hope that I am given the opportunity to do it. But it is not the time to speak about things like that just yet.

"We have the nucleus of a squad to take the club straight back up.

"It was disappointing but it has been a long six or seven months. We showed the fight for the battle but were not quite good enough.

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Portsmouth and Harry Redknapp for staying up. They have had an amazing run to win seven, draw two and only lose one.

"This is Championship form and not relegation form. To be fair they have been too good for any of us to catch."
