Benitez Focused On Task At Hand

Ecuador international striker arrived at St Andrew's in the summer from Mexican side Santos Laguna, initially on loan after a knee problem discovered during his medical meant the deal was renegotiated.

But Blues have the option to make his switch permanent at the end of the campaign in a club-record transfer potentially worth just under £8million.

Benitez said: "I'm only thinking about the present, I can't think about the future. I'm here playing for Birmingham and that's what I want to do and that's what I'm concentrating on, to give my best.

"I've settled in very well, I know it's the best league in the world and I'm very happy to be here. It took me a while to get established but now I think I'm making some progress and I want to do everything I can to do my best for the club."

When quizzed about his nickname, a coy Benitez refused to give much away.

He said: "They've called me Chucho since I was a little boy. Everybody asks me why but it's a secret. When I arrived in Mexico they kept asking the same thing but I'm not going to say."
