Benno surprised at recall

Benno, who has made only two starts in the Worthington Cup this season, was called on for his Premiership debut against Blackburn at the expense of the Belgian keeper, who has conceded nine goals in his last three matches.

“I was quite surprised really. Nico’s been doing really well but the run of results hasn’t gone for us," Benno told the B'ham evening Mail.

“If the gaffer wanted to freshen things up then that’s his prerogative. I was surprised but it was a nice surprise. Fortunately things went well for me.

“It is unfortunate only one person can play in goal.

"Nico and I get on well, we train together every day and there is no problem between us. He wished me all the best before the game and that was good of him.

“I have been out for a while but I don’t think it has been frustrating. Nico came in last season and did well towards the end so I knew he would start.

“He has done well and I have just had to wait my time. I prepare for every game as if I am playing and Nico and I help each other along the way.”
