Bowen praise for Damien Johnson

Last updated : 15 October 2002 By Brian Cartlidge
Johnson, a bargain £100,000 signing from Blackburn Rovers last March, has been used in various positions this season and at West Ham even started in the problem left-back position.

"I think if you ask any of the management or coaches at the club they will tell you Damien has probably been the biggest plus for us," Bowen told the Birmingham Evening Mail.

"He was consistently our best performer in pre-season and he has carried that through. He came into the club last year and did okay. He took a while to settle down. He had a hard time at Blackburn. He feels he didn't have a fair crack of the whip there and he hadn't played much competitively when he moved.

When we reported back for training he was in great shape. He is the fittest at the club bar none and grasped the opportunity in front of him.

"Every day after training he has been working on using his left foot and improving his distribution down the left-hand side.

"That shows his great professionalism in trying to be the best he can in positions that are not natural to him.

"He wants to improve and get better. We are delighted with him."
