Bruce happy to get one over old friend Sam

Such is the friendship between Bruce and the Bolton boss that after the clash at St. Andrew's the two managers and their partners were dining out together in celebration of Bruce's wife Janet's birthday.

"We've been talking about the game all week and we knew how massive it was going to be," said the Blues boss.

"I was looking for a response from the players after last week and I got it.

"We knew that it was never going to be a pretty game with conditions like they were, but we worked hard, had the right attitude and stuck together.

On getting a result against his old friend Allardyce, Bruce said: "It's about time I did beat him because when I was as Sheffield United and Huddersfield, he always seemed to come out on top.

"It was an important win for us. We said it was going to be difficult in this division and we are realistic.

"We've got to hang in there, by hook or by crook.

"All the teams have got quality players, but 15 points in the first 12 games is not a bad return for us."
