Bruce: No-one better than Upson

Upson has been superb at the heart of the Blues defence since his signing from Arsenal during the last transfer window and his partnership with Kenny Cunningham has got better with every game the two have played together - so much so that Darren Purse can't claim a place in the side since returning from injury!

"When we monitored Matthew's progress when on loan at Reading earlier this season, we noticed that he got better and better with every game under his belt," the Blues boss said.

"It has been the same scenario since he came here. He needed games under his belt in the Premiership, he's had those in the past three months and has been superb for us along with Kenny Cunningham.

"If there is currently a better English left-sided central defender than Matthew Upson, then I have yet to see them.

"He has produced performance after performance for us which have been absolutely impeccable.

"He's had a taste of the England call-up with the match against Australia and he's just got to keep playing the way he is and I'm sure more of the same will come."
