Bruce: Schoolboy defending cost us

Last updated : 10 November 2002 By Brian Cartlidge
Bruce felt that Blues could have been on the end of an even bigger defeat: "It was basic defensive errors and you just can't come here and concede goals like we did.

"It was schoolboy defending at times, to be honest. The number of times they got in between our full-back and centre-back in the first half was scary.

"It could have been four or five at half-time, never mind three.

"That's the first time this season someone's given us a doing. But you can't defend like that and they duly punished us.

"We did have two or three opportunities to score just after their first - but then a basic, elementary mistake cost us for their second goal."

Bruce added: "Chelsea were just too good for us on the day. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say fair play to them."

"They've got some talented players and are a match for anyone on their day so they must have a chance of the title."
