Bruce upset with second half display

Blues led through a Stern John penalty on 49 minutes and had the luxury of playing against only 10 men after Evertons Alan Stubbs was dismissed for conceding the spot-kick.

With just 90 seconds remaining a David Unsworth shot hit the post and rebounded into the net off the back of defender Kenny Cunningham to deny Bues their first Premiership victory.

But Bruce was disappointed that the team failed to make their extra-man count: “In the second half it was possibly the worst we’ve played since I’ve been here,” Bruce told the clubs official website.

“We’ve got the extra man, we’ve got the goal and for some unknown reason we’ve sat back and invited pressure onto us.

“All credit to Everton and the crowd that helped them, but we must learn, and learn quickly.

“We can’t keep inviting the pressure we invited towards the end.

“Even though they’ve had two ricochets and we’re all gutted we’ve got to analyse it and think that when they were down to ten men we should have done better.”

“We should have got forward, but unfortunately for us we went backwards.

“I thought the first half was even and if we’d have played like that in the second I’m sure we would have gone on to win the game.

“We missed our passes too often.

“In the second half I can’t remember us stringing four or five passes together.

“At this level you can’t surrender possession so easily.”

“Thankfully we’ve got our first point on the board, but it should have been three.

“I can’t fault the players for their effort and endeavour, but we’ve got to learn how to win the games.

“It’s a learning curve but we’ve got to realise that we’re playing against better quality opposition in front of big crowds.

“We’ve now got to dust ourselves down and get ready for Leeds.”
