Well the England international schemer certainly fits the description of the type of player Blues boss Steve Bruce is looking to add to the squad.
Bruce has repeatedly said that he is only interested in players, preferably British, that will improve his squad and 28-year-old Butt certainly fits into that category.
Chairman David Gold said over the weekend: "I think its a question of saying we understand that a quality player is available and that you pursue that player." We'll he's quality no doubt about that.
Blues I'm sure will be one of the first clubs on the phone enquiring about Butt although I'm sure there will be many others too, both in this country and abroad.
Can Bruce use his persuasive powers in signing Butt? Will the fee United will want for the player be within Blues budget? And of course there's the players salary demands - will we be able to match those? All questions that make me scepticle to our being linked with such a player.
Middlesbrough (as always!), Spurs, Blackburn and Everton are all said to be monitoring the situation so we'll just have to wait and see I suppose - but what a coup it would be!
