The 31-year-old, who has allegedly fallen out with Steve Bruce after a training ground bust-up, can play in midfield or attack but has made little (if any) impact at St Andrews this season and has already been on loan at Stoke during the current campaign.

Blades boss Neil Warnock tried to sign him from Watford a couple of years ago and told the club's official website: "Tommy knows he will have to play to the top of his form to get in the side."

Mooney, who arived at St Andrews on a free transfer in the summer of 2001, has made just one appearance for Blues this term, coming on as a substitute during the 1-0 home defeat against Blackburn on 24 August.

Tommy went straight into the squad for tonight's Sheffield derby which United won 3-1 but played no part despite being on the subs' bench
