Carter on international duty

Carter has recently returned to Academy football at St. Andrew's having failed to recapture the form that made him a regular in the Blues squad last season.

However, Blues boss Steve Bruce feels it won't be long before the eighteen-year-old midfielder is knocking on the door for a first team place again.

"Darren has been a bit disappointed that he hasn't made the squad all the time this season, but he has been involved on several occasions and there is plenty of competition - Darryl Powell and Bryan Hughes have found that out as well," said the Blues boss.

"I think what we have to remember is that Darren's 18 and a lot has happened to him in the past year. Young players always have their ups and downs and he's going through one of those difficult periods.

"He played in the youth team last Saturday. He went back and enjoyed his football with his mates. There's no question that Darren's a talent and he will be knocking on the door again."

Carter will be handed a place in the starting eleven for the England under-20's game at the Stadium of Light - scene of Blues most recent away victory - after an impressive performance in his last game when he earned rave reviews from coach Les Reed.
