The Blues skipper was thought to have fractured ribs during the 2-1 defeat at Loftus Road but tests have showed that he had instead suffered a collapsed lung.
The Republic of Ireland centre-back is now due for further tests which will determine how long he will be sidelined for but he is sure to miss the pre-season friendly against Deportivo La Coruna in Spain on Friday.
