Defender should be back for Bolton clash

The return of the influential Ireland international is a big boost for Bruce, who will be without Olivier Tebily for the game against the Trotters as he serves a one match ban for his sending off at the Hawthorns two weeks ago.

"We are encouraged by Kenny's progress," Bruce said. "Hopefully, he will make it for Saturday. It is vital that he makes it, to be perfectly honest, because we are so stretched in that area.

"It would be great to have him back because this is a vital game for us - I would say the biggest of the season so far. If we beat Bolton, we will go seven points clear of them, so they would have to win three more games than we do in the rest of the season.

"That would be a nice cushion to have. I saw Bolton and Sunderland play on Monday night and, even though there are only 11 games gone, I detected a bit of a relegation-battle atmosphere. There is pressure around even at this early stage and if we win on Saturday, it will just keep it off us a little bit.

"A win would be so important in so many ways. We need a big performance from the players and the supporters - both were a bit flat against Manchester City."
