Melchiot, who was forced to sit out his second consecutive game against West Brom on Sunday having not fully recovered from the ankle injury he sustained in the home win against Liverpool on February 12th, is expected to begin training again on Monday with a view to him returning to the Blues line-up for the second city derby game against Aston Villa at St Andrew's on March 20th.

Meanwhile, long term injury victim Izzet has stepped up his rehabilitation from knee surgery and he is expected to begin training again in the next couple of weeks.

The Turkish international has been sidelined since the home game against Everton in November having undergone surgery on the knee injury he originally sustained in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle the month before.

Izzet has managed just 10 starts for Blues since joining the club from Leicester City last summer but Blues boss Steve Bruce is confident that the player will play again this season.
