The Blues midfielder was sent off for the first time in his illustrious career for retaliation to a tackle by Northern Ireland midfielder Michael Hughes just nine minutes into the 2006 qualifier in Cardiff on Wednesday night and although the red card cannot be appealed against the FAW have written to FIFA seeking leniency in what suspension Savage will receive.

Savage will definately get an automatic one game ban for his actions but if the incident is deemed as violent conduct FIFA could impose a three game ban.

A decision on the length of Savage's ban is expected by the end of this month.
