The Blues top scorer was a late withdrawal from the Finland squad because of the back injury which had made him a doubt for Blues' fixture at home to Leeds Utd last weekend.
Alexei Eremenko, who spent a time on trial at Blues towards the end of last year, opened the scoring for Finland in the 51st minute and former Liverpool midfielder Jari Litmanen doubled their lead four minutes from time.
Malta grabbed a consolation goal through Michael Mifsud three minutes into added time to bring the final score to 2-1 to the Forsless Finns.
