Struggling Hull put in hard shift for little reward at Birmingham

What a good day to be a Premier League manager on gardening leave. Whatever Phil Brown was doing yesterday it seems fair to assume that Hull City's departing manager had a much more enjoyable afternoon counting his wages in the sunshine than the 26,669 spectators who had the misfortune of paying to watch this soporific match.

Presumably it was to acknowledge their encouragement even though the spectre of relegation lingers on after this 0-0 draw with left Hull three points adrift of safety, but it could just as easily have been to thank them for sticking around for the whole 90 minutes.

A poor game produced a result which both managers preferred to view in context. Since both Birmingham City and Hull City had been so badly mauled last weekend, an insipid, scoreless draw at St Andrew’s did have its merits.

Joe Hart's heroics deny Hull City much-needed victory

Unarguably, Phil Brown’s departure from Hull City has left the Premier League a less colourful institution. Alas for his former employers, they remain ungalvanised by a new regime. Under Ian Dowie, Hull’s “management consultant”, who assisted Alan Shearer in relegating Newcastle United last season, they have won once in five attempts and, after yesterday’s enthusiastic but flair-free and punch-free showing, the Championship and concomitant financial uncertainty are beginning to beckon.
