The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international cost the Blues just £50,000 when he signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 2002 and has gone on to make 85 first-team appearances for City.

A delighted Blues boss Steve Bruce told the club’s official website: “For £50,000, what Damien's done for us he would have to be, pound for pound, one of the best signings I have ever made.

“It's the way he conducts himself, he's a manager's dream.

“He can play left-back, right-back, in the middle, anywhere and he'll give you his all as well.”

Johnson was involved in a fiery World Cup qualifier with his country on Wednesday evening, with Maik Taylor also featuring in the 2-2 draw with Wales.

The game also saw fellow Blues star Robbie Savage red-carded for the first time in his career for a clash with Michael Hughes.
