Kenna pulls out of Ireland squad

The Blues stand-in skipper has been told by club surgeons that he needs to rest an Achilles tendon problem so he will miss next Wednesday's Euro 2004 qualifier in Dublin.

"Jeff has been troubled with the injury all season," said Blues physio John Pryce. "After looking at the scans, the club surgeon has advised him that he needs to rest it."

This is a major disappointment to Kenna who was recalled to the Ireland squad by boss Mick McCarthy after three years in the international wilderness.

"I am very disappointed to miss out especially after not being involved for the last three years," said Kenna, who won the last of his 27 caps against Turkey in November 1999.

Kenna now faces a race against the clock to be fit for Blues' next Premiership game at West Brom on October 19th.
