The 35-year-old former Blues skipper, who was not offered a new dea at St Andrews following the clubs relegation from the Premiership last season, is set to become the Black Cats first signing of the summer on a free transfer.
Cunningham spent four seasons at Blues having been signed from Wimbledon (now MK Doins) for an undisclosed fee in July 2002.
