The 35-year-old former Blues skipper, who was released by the club at the end of last season, has put pen to paper on a one year deal at The Stadium of Light.
Cunningham spent four seasons at Blues having been signed from Wimbledon (now MK Dons) for an undisclosed fee in July 2002.
