With his current contract at the club due to expire at the end of this season Marcelo believes team-mate Stan Lazaridis could hold the key to him being offered an extension on that.

"It's great that Stan is back in the team" Marcelo told the Birmingham Post.

"He gives us something a little bit different.

"His pace down the left is a real worry to opposing teams and he gets some great crosses in, which is what I thrive on.

"My strength is in opposing boxes, getting in headers, so if Stan gets in three or four crosses in a game I believe I will score at least one goal."

"I would like to stay at Birmingham for another season or maybe two or three," he said.

"But the manager is settling in and having a look at all his players, which ones he wants to keep and which ones he doesn't.

My agent is trying to do the best deal for me and all I can do is keep trying to score goals and make out a good case for another contract."
