Mystery surrounds Savage interest

Mystery tonight surrounded a reported move by Everton for Blues' Robbie Savage.

Speaking to Colin Tattum of the Evening Mail Steve Bruce insisted "I did speak to David Moyes a few days before we came out here, but Robbie wasn't mentioned in the conversation,"

Intriguingly, Everton were Blues' rivals for Savage's signature a year ago following Leicester City's relegation but could then not afford the initial £1.2million fee and wages.

Now Moyes is in a position to spend and strengthen his midfield, which could be hit by the loss of Li Tie. He has already failed in a bid to sign Fulham's Sean Davis and was also linked with new Blues recruit David Dunn before his record £5.5million switch from Blackburn Rovers to St Andrew's.

Speaking on SKY TV this evening Robbie would only say "It's flattering to be linked with a club of Everton's status but until the manager tells me otherwise I'm a Birmingham City player"

Though Bruce is looking for Savage and Dunn to form a strong alliance in his midfield this season if Moyes does decide to test Blues' resolve with a large bid it would be a big decision for Bruce to make, especially with Aliou Cisse's future so unclear.
