Powell signs for Blues

Without a club since being released by The Rams in the summer, Powell has been training with the Blues squad for the past few weeks.

He can operate in either defence or midfield and is seen by boss Steve Bruce has ideal cover for those positions.

“Darryl has been the captain of a Premiership club for a number of years and he hasn’t found himself fixed up," Bruce told the club's official website.

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to take advantage of the situation.

“It’s a chance for him to prove himself, and it’s up to him now.”

“To be fair to Darryl he’s only played two reserve team games in something like seven months.

“He’s trained with us for the past two or three weeks and has done well which is why we’ve given him a contract.”

“We’ve got three injuries in defence and we’ll be looking to put him into the squad.

“This is a good opportunity for him, because you can never tell with the transfer window how big you need your squad to be.”
