Purse disputes penalty decision

Last updated : 08 December 2002 By Brian Cartlidge
With the scores still level at 0-0, Purse was adjudged to have handled Wayne Bridges cross in the box and Saints in-form striker James Beattie scored the first of his two goals from the resulting spot-kick.

However, Purse claimed the Cleveland official made an error of judgement which he believes influenced the outcome of the game.

"The ball came off my hip and was nowhere near my hand, I'm absolutely gutted by the decision and I'm sure that the television replay will show that my hand was nowhere near the ball, said Purse.

"When the referee gave it I just walked off in disgust, because you can't really have a go at officials because you just get yourself booked.

"Referees just don't want to talk, but that sort of decision has changed the game. They go one-nil up and holes open up in the game and then they go on to get a second goal and win the game."
