Purse takes over the Blues captaincy from Martin O'Connor who has left the club for Walsall.

"I'm chuffed to bits. It's a great honour and it's something I've always wanted to do here." said Purse.

"Martin did a great job and I hope I will be able to carry on where he left off."

Blues boss Steve Bruce said the fact that Purse has not yet committed himself to the club on a long-term contract doesn't mean he won't be any less able to do the job.

"Yes, he is our new captain," confirmed Bruce.

"You always know what you are going to get from him, he leads by example. I believe we are very, very close to signing Darren on a new contract," Bruce went on.

"Negotiations have taken place the last two or three days and I hope we get a decision one way or the other soon.

"I want Darren to stay here, I want him to be captain. I hope he takes up the offer."
