Purse on stand-by

Cunningham has forged an impressive partnership in the heart of the Blues defence with recent signing Matthew Upson and Purse must have wondered when he was going to get a chance of returning to the first team.

However, Cunningham pulled up in training earlier this week with a groin strain and is doubtful for Blues' game with Sunderland at St. Andrew's on Saturday, so Purse could line-up next to Upson for the first time since the latters transfer from Arsenal in January.

Purse himself has not started a game for Blues since picking up an ankle injury in the away game at Fulham last December, although he has stepped-up his return to match fitness with four reserves outings in the last three weeks.

Ironically, Purse did not travel with Keith Bertschin's second string squad for the reserves game at Sunderland on Thursday night and is the obvious choice to replace Cunningham should the Repuclic of Ireland international fail to recover in time for what is a vital game in Blues quest to secure their Premiership status..
