Purse's injury nightmare

The Blues centre-back, who has been sidelined since the 1-0 victory at Fulham on 15th December, ended up on a drip with a drain attached to his leg.

"It has been horrific. Darren had been hoping to play against Bolton and an infection set into a wound which was only a centimetre across," said Blues boss Steve Bruce.

"It went up from his ankle to his leg to his knee and to his thigh. It was one of those galloping infections and he ended up in hospital on a drip for four or five days to feed him anti-biotics while his ankle was drained

"He will have further blood tests on Tuesday to see if the infection has left his body and then, as soon as we can get the swelling out of his ankle, he can start to come back with us

"It wasn't career-threatening but it just shows what can happen if a little speck of dirt gets into a wound."
