Savage calls for new signings

Blues boss Steve Bruce currently has seven defenders on the injury list, and Savage fears that unless Blues strengthen they will get relegated.

"Our squad is now very weak because of the injuries we have - and we've also got four suspensions coming up as well," Savage told the B'ham Evening Mail.

"It's not fair on the manager, the players or the fans if we just settle for what we have. Yes, we have made a decent start to the season but now we are reaching the important stage, and look how thin we are!

"At Manchester United on Saturday, we had Geoff Horsfield ending up at centre-half, Curtis Woodhouse at left-back and Darryl Powell on the left-wing. You can't be going to Old Trafford and having to play with a striker in defence. It's ridiculous. This is the big league now.

"I believe if we stay with the squad we've got then we will go down.

"That's not having a go at the lads and being all doom and gloom. It's just the situation we are in at the moment. I'm being realistic. If everybody was fit, then we'd probably be good enough.

"But that isn't the case. We're being killed and unless we buy three or four players then we've had it.

"We're going to play at Leeds on New Year's Day with 15 fit players and one recognised centre-half. I came to the club and was told about great plans.

"I know it's tough in the first season up and finishing 15th, 16th, 17th will do us. But the way it's going at the moment we are going to be back at places like Rotherham and Grimsby.

"I certainly don't want to be relegated. I want to be a Premiership player at Birmingham City and look to progress with them. We need help. We need players coming in when the transfer window opens because our situation is, to me, very serious."
