The tough tackling right-back who was part of the Blues team which beat Villa to win the League Cup in 1963, died last week following a long illness.

He aquired the nickname 'Stan the Wham' because of his ferocious shooting and had been battling Alzheimer's for the last five years and more recently cancer.

After winning the FA Cup with Villa in 1957 he continued playing until 1961 when manager Joe Mercer judged him over the hill and Stan moved to Blues and proved Mercer wrong by playing for another five years.

Former Blues manager Gil Merrick, who bought Stan from Villa in 1961, told The Birmingham Evening Mail: "He brought a great spirit to the team. He was a fantastic man and a marvellous player.

"There's no doubt he was one of the best and compared with today's players he was a gem."

Johnny Dixon, his former captain at Villa, said: "Stan was a great man to have in your side because he was a winner.

After retiring from the game in 1966 he lived at Hollywood and worked as a storeman at Lucas Industries.
