The central defender, who signed from Arsenal on a three-year-deal last week, says he feels he has come to a club with ambition and even if they were to be relegated he would not be leaving.

“I have no clause inserted that allows me to leave Birmingham if they get relegated,” Upson told ICBirmingham.

“Why would I? That is not the way I work. I am totally committed to Birmingham come what may.

"I am in for the full sentence and if that means playing First Division football, then I will.

“But that is not something I can see happening. This is a team that is building for a great future.

"They are very ambitious and the manager and directors have amassed a great squad," he added.

“City are a team on the way up. I wanted to be with a club who will build for the future and that is what will happen at Birmingham.”
