Upson Has Nothing To Prove

Since joining the club at the start of this year the England international has formed a superb defensive partnership with Republic of Ireland skipper Kenny Cunningham having spent the best part of his days at Highbury either in the reserves side or out on loan.

"To be fair to Matthew, he wanted to come and play for us," said Bruce.

"He has nothing to prove to Arsenal. He had had enough of sitting on the fringes and being on the outside looking in. When that happens, it is very hard.

"I know I keep saying this but I honestly believe he is the best left-sided defender in this country."
