Vickers targets Sunderland game

The club captain was looking at making a comeback in Blues game against Fulham on Sunday but is still restricted in his movement and the game at The Stadium of Light next Saturday is now a more likely date for his return.

Vickers broke the rib in Blues' game with West Brom at The Hawthorns last month - his first Premiership start of the season - having missed the first month following knee surgery.

"I think I must have run over several black cats," said the 35-year-old centre-back.

"It has been a deeply frustrating time but, hopefully, it's nearly over now. There is a chance that I will be back in contention for the game at Sunderland.

"This weekend is too soon, there's no doubt about that. I am still in a little bit of discomfort and the most important thing of all is not to rush back and aggravate the problem.

"I was expecting to be out for four to six weeks, which is what it was when I did the same injury, courtesy of Kevin Francis's knee, when I was playing for Middlesbrough against Blues four years ago.

"That means I'm just about on schedule, but time is dragging. I can't wait to be fully involved again. So far, I've been running but that's about all and after missing the first chunk of the season after my knee operation, it's been tough."
