Leigh Whitehouse's Tribute To Brian Clough

Last updated : 21 September 2004 By Leigh Whitehouse

Brian Clough was always an outspoken man, always controversial...there will never be another football manager like Brian. He took a rather small club and made them champions of Europe.

Brain was the best manager England never had. He had an outstanding ability to motivate players. He was a working class hero whose achievements earned him great respect from everyone connected with football.

He represented everything positive about football - the teams he sent out of the dressing room were exciting, skilful and clean. Clough had the ability to turn players who'd been labelled 'average' into international superstars.

His teamtalks were simple; he used to hold a football in his hand and say "Gentlemen, this is a football - any chance of us getting it?" This is just one typical quote of Brian's.

He led Derby and Nottingham Forest out of the depths of the Second Division and made them world competitors. Brian's playing career was equally outstanding, with 251 goals in 274 games, before unfortuantely - a knee injury cut short his success as a goalscorer.

His partnership with Peter Taylor was a huge success. "The chemistry was absolutely brilliant" Clough had said. One of Brian's regrets is that they never buried the hatchet after falling out.

'Cloughie' remains a footballing legend, whose achievements will never be repeated.
