The Wirral-based referee is yet to officiate in a game for either side so far this season.

The last time Mike Dean took charge of a Blues fixture was in the 2-0 FA Cup 4th Round defeat against Chelsea on 30th January 2005. Matthew Upson was the only Blues player booked at Stamford Bridge on that day.

The last time Mike Dean took charge of a Newcastle game was for their 3-1 home defeat to Manchester United on 14th November 2004. Titus Bramble and Ronnie Johnsen were both booked for the Geordies on that occasion.

In total Mike Dean has taken charge of 9 League and Cup games so far this season in which he has handed out 27 yellow cards but, as yet, no reds.

Mr A Butler and Mr A Halliday will be Mike Dean's assistants for the game at St. James' Park on Saturday.
