Blues Res 0 - Villa Res 2

Last updated : 01 September 2003 By Brian Cartlidge
In front of a good crowd on a very cold night at St. Andrews the Blues reserves were beaten by local rivals Villa.

In a disappointing opening 45minutes, Juan Pablo Angel gave Villa the lead right on the stroke of half-time, a simple tap-in past keeper Ian Bennett after a cross from the right.

Blues upped the tempo a little at the beginning of the second half as Villa sat back on their one goal lead.

However, a good solo effort from Moore doubled the visitors lead on 76 minutes just as Blues seemed to be getting back into the game.

Moore outpaced Beauchamp with a good run down the left channel and fired past Bennett from just inside the box.

Blues had their chances - Carter and Hughes being foiled by some excellent goalkeeping from Stefan Postma, Powell missed a good oppurtunity with a free header inside the box and centre-half Sonny Parker came close too with a stooping header in the second half.

Overall it was a disappointing game - Vickers and Carter performed admirably, Sadler didn't look out of place at all at this level and Fagan worked tirelessly up-front with little service.

Blues: Bennett, Beauchamp, Sadler, Woodhouse, Vickers, Parker, Hughes, Powell, Fagan, Kirvoski, Carter. Subs: Davies, Hipkiss (Parker), Evans (Woodhouse), Allen, Barrowman.

Villa: Postma, Henderson, Bewers, Wright, Edwards, Hylton, Cooke, Stone, Hitzlsperger, Jackman, Angel, S.Moore. Subs: Fahey, McGrath, Davis, Cahill.
