The hosts took an eleventh minute lead from a Mark Walton free-kick and The Magpies doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second period when, from a corner, central defender Marcos Painter deflected the ball past a stranded Ian Bennett in the Blues goal.

Newcastle's third goal came six minutes from time when Brett Hinks brought down Alan O'brien in the box and the same player dusted himself down to convert from the resulting penalty kick.
