Bennett - Did everything he needed to do well. Was redundant for the majority of the game, but will be delighted with a clean sheet.

Johnson - Coped fairly well against Vassell whose pace was a concern. Worryingly had to go off injured though.

Clapham - Good all-round display. Defensively sound, and no problems going forward either. Best display of the season.

Cunningham - Marshalled the defence well, as usual, and was there with key blocks and interceptions when need be.

Upson - Defensively excellent as expected, but one or two wayward balls when passing.

Dunn - Worst performance of the season. Seemed to think that by turning up and wearing white boots he'd be able to beat Villa single-handedly.

Lazaridis - Worried Delaney at times, but didn't get enough good service to offer a threat throughout the game.

Savage - Quiet in many respects, and was perhaps lucky not to be sent off after stupid challenge on Johnsen when already on a yellow card.

Clemence - Probably the best performer in the middle of the park, though perhaps should be disappointed at not breaking the deadlock.

Dugarry - Much the same as Dunn. Tried to be too clever, too often, and struggled.

Forssell - Seemed to come alive in the final third, but didn't offer too much else. Should have had a penalty.

SUBS:

Cisse - Added a bit more steel to the middle of the park.

Morrison - Ran and worked hard and showed some nice touches.

Tebily - Did well against Vassell after replacing Johnson.
