Liverpool took the lead two minutes into the second half of the game at St Andrews through Steven Gerrard but Blues' never-say-die attitude came to fruition again as just nine minutes later defender Liam Ridgewell equalised to earn them a point against Rafael Benitez's side.
"It was another good result, we might even have won it," McLeish told Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw.
"We came back strongly with the usual spirit that we've shown so many times already this season.
"We got a great equaliser, Liam stealing in at the far post Martin Peters style and we had a great chance with the cross from the left that Bowyer got tangled up in his legs a little bit.
"Bow normally puts them in the back of the net. That would have put us ahead and we'd have been tough to beat after that.
"There is great competition for the end of the season. There's plenty there for the players to play for, they want to keep going on and I want to finish in the top half."
